Gaudí's Barcelona

Five of the seven Gaudí works on the UNESCO list have their own audio guide here: the Sagrada Familia, Park Güell, La Pedrera (Casa Milà), Casa Batlló and Casa Vicens, the first house he designed. The Sagrada Familia, La Pedrera and Casa Batlló stand in the Eixample; Casa Vicens is in Gràcia, and Park Güell on Carmel hill, at the top of Gràcia.

From the same modernisme, but by Lluís Domènech i Montaner, comes the Palau de la Música Catalana, also a World Heritage Site.

The old city

Ciutat Vella holds Barcelona Cathedral, in the middle of the Gothic Quarter; La Rambla, which runs down to the port; and La Boqueria Market, halfway along La Rambla. The Picasso Museum is on Carrer de Montcada, in the Ribera neighbourhood, and a few minutes' walk away lies Citadel Park.

The heights and the stadium

Montjuïc is the hill that closes the city to the southwest, by the port, with the Magic Fountain at its foot. Tibidabo is the highest peak of the Collserola range, to the northwest, and its funicular has been climbing it since 1901. And Camp Nou is FC Barcelona's stadium.

Flavors of Barcelona

The everyday classic is pa amb tomàquet: bread rubbed with ripe tomato, olive oil and salt.

For breakfast or an afternoon snack, Barcelona dips churros in thick hot chocolate. To see the produce of the city in one place, walk through the stalls of La Boqueria.
