About Athens
Athens comes in layers: the sacred rock of the Acropolis, the square where the Athenians ran their city, the colossal temple that Hadrian finished and a 277 m hill from which you see it all at once. These are our free audio guides to the city, each with its practical details checked against the official sources and dated.
What to visit and what it costs
The Acropolis ticket costs €30.00 (€15.00 reduced) and is valid for a single entry: once you leave, the same ticket does not let you back in. It covers the Parthenon, the temple that crowns the rock, and the Temple of Athena Nike, the small 4-column temple on the bastion to the right of the ramp. The same ticket covers the slopes, where the Odeon of Herodes Atticus stands: its interior has been closed since 1 July 2026 for a restoration that the Greek Ministry of Culture puts at 3 years at least, so today you see it from Dionysiou Areopagitou, the pedestrian street in front of its façade.
The Temple of Olympian Zeus costs €20.00 and keeps 16 columns: 15 standing and 1 lying on the ground since the storm of 26 October 1852. Its columns are 17.25 m tall. Hadrian's Arch stands outside the fence and can be seen for free.
The Ancient Agora costs €20.00, with the museum in the Stoa of Attalos included, and it is where you understand how the ancient city actually worked. The Temple of Hephaestus stands inside it, on the Kolonos Agoraios hill, and has no ticket of its own: it keeps its 34 columns and both pediments, and the visit goes round the colonnade, not inside.
The free side of Athens
Lycabettus Hill is free on foot. It rises 277 m, and from the top the Acropolis is seen whole and from above. The funicular costs €10.00 one way and €13.00 return, runs every 30 minutes from 09:00 to 02:30 every day of the year, and its lower station is at Aristippou 1. The City of Athens closes the hill on days of very high fire risk.
The National Garden is free as well, with no ticket and no booking: it is the shade between the Temple of Olympian Zeus and Syntagma Square.
