About Paris

Paris has 1 free audio guide in English on this site so far, and it starts at the city's great Gothic cathedral. It plays on your phone straight from its page, with no app and no sign-up, and runs for about 3½ minutes.

Notre-Dame de Paris stands on the Île de la Cité, where Bishop Maurice de Sully laid the first stone in 1163. A fire destroyed its spire and much of the roof on 15 April 2019; the spire rose again, 96 metres tall, and the cathedral reopened on 8 December 2024. Entry is free every day, and booking a time slot is free and optional: it only cuts the queue. The towers are a separate visit with their own ticket, €16, and 424 steps to the top of the south tower. The metro stop on the island is Cité, on line 4.
