After so many cruises, I know very well which must-have items to pack and which ones are included on the ship. I want to share my best tips for you to prepare your ideal luggage and enjoy the experience on board to the fullest.

Travel documents: first things first

Before packing your suitcase, make sure you have your passport and vaccination card handy. They are essential to board both the plane and the cruise ship. Check expiration dates and make sure you have all the documentation required by the cruise line.

Your passport is a must in your wallet or carry-on bag when you travel. Many cruise ships also ask for a complete COVID-19 vaccination card. Don’t forget to bring it with you to avoid mishaps.

Toiletries: the basics in your toiletry bag

Inside your suitcase, include all your usual toiletries and oral hygiene products. The cruise does not provide a toothbrush, toothpaste, deodorant or razor. Bring enough for the entire cruise.

Also, don’t forget your favorite perfume or cologne, combs, nail clippers and other items you use daily. These are details that make the difference to feel comfortable.

Sunscreen, suntan lotion and skin care

Days in the sun, wind and sea salt can dry out your skin. So pack sunscreen, suntan lotion and moisturizers for your face and body.

Your lips and eyes will also appreciate it. Include lip balms, drops or moisturizers for this delicate area. Ideally, apply them every day to prevent dryness.

Medications for frequent use

Although cruise ships have excellent medical services on board, I recommend that you bring your usual medications, such as painkillers, antacids, anti-inflammatories, antihistamines, etc.

Avoid buying them on the ship, where they can cost up to 10 times more. Take the necessary amount and a little extra just in case. This will give you peace of mind during the trip.

Small bag or backpack

When you go out to explore the different ports, it will be very useful to carry a small bag or backpack. There you can store documents, camera, snacks, water, portable battery and other items needed during your excursions.

This way you avoid carrying a large suitcase and have the essentials at hand. Select a waterproof bag with multiple compartments. And if possible, buy a backpack that offers security, such as a zipper that opens only on the side that hits your back, and not on the outside.

Onboard entertainment

It’s important to unwind and relax during a cruise, but sometimes you feel like reading, listening to music or playing games. If you need extra entertainment in your stateroom, bring an e-book, tablet, headphones, portable speakers or a console such as Nintendo Switch.

Choose compact, lightweight items. Download movies or ebooks in case the internet connection fails – have fun without disturbing other passengers!

Prohibited items that you should not carry

Before closing your luggage, check that you are not carrying prohibited items, such as hair straighteners, alcohol or illegal substances. This includes alcoholic beverages not purchased on the cruise.

If your line allows it, you may bring 1 or 2 bottles of wine or champagne for a corkage fee. Please inquire beforehand to avoid having them confiscated upon boarding.

What you will find in your cabin

Even if you pack a full suitcase, you do not need to bring towels, sheets or basic toiletries. Staterooms are fully equipped with:

  • Bath and pool towels.
  • Sheets, pillows, and blankets.
  • Shower gel, shampoo and conditioner
  • Toilet paper and hair dryer

If you require additional items, the service staff will provide them for you. Enjoy these included amenities so you only bring what you need.
