Planning your visit to the Colosseum (2026)
A standard ticket is €18 and covers the Colosseum, the Roman Forum and the Palatine for 24 hours — but it gives you only 75 minutes inside the Colosseum itself, and it does not include the arena floor or the underground. The Colosseum opens at 8:30, tickets go on sale 30 days ahead with a compulsory time slot, and they are issued in your name. Press play on the free audio guide above and you can walk the whole monument in your head before you spend a euro.

The 75-minute limit inside the Colosseum
With the standard €18 ticket you may stay inside the Colosseum for 75 minutes. It is written into the park’s visitor regulation, and it is the single most useful thing to know before you go. Your ticket lasts 24 hours overall, but the Colosseum portion of it does not.
In practice 75 minutes is enough, and comfortably so, if you arrive knowing what you want to see. It is not enough to wander in and work it out on the spot in August with the summer crowds around you. That is exactly what the audio guide above is for: listen to it on the way there, decide which of the arena, the hypogeum and the upper tiers matter most to you, and walk in with a plan.
What your ticket does not include
The €18 ticket does not get you onto the arena floor or down into the underground. This is the most common disappointment at the gate, and it is worth being clear about it in advance. Here is what you actually get:
- Included: the first level of the Colosseum, the second level with its panoramic terraces, the Colosseum Museum, the Roman Forum, the Roman Forum Museum, the Palatine, and whatever exhibitions are running.
- Not included: the arena floor and the underground (the hypogeum). Those need a Full Experience Underground and Arena ticket, valid two consecutive days. There is also an Only Arena ticket, and a Full Experience Attic that adds the top tier with the panoramic lift.
The extra tickets are limited and sell out well before the standard one does, so if the arena is the reason you are coming to Rome, book it the day the 30-day window opens — not the week you fly.
When is the best time to visit the Colosseum?
Take the first slot of the day at 8:30, or the last two hours before closing. The middle of the day is the worst of everything at once: the coach groups, the heat, and the longest walk from the gate to the shade. Book the Colosseum at 8:30 and you get the arena tiers nearly empty, with the Forum and Palatine still ahead of you for the rest of your 24 hours.
- Spring and autumn: the best weather and the heaviest demand. The 30-day booking window closes out fast for morning slots — set a reminder for the day it opens.
- Summer: come at 8:30 or come late. There is almost no shade in the Forum, and the Colosseum’s upper tiers bake in the afternoon.
- Winter: the quietest season, but watch the clock — from 25 October last admission drops to 15:30 and the park closes at 16:30. A late lunch can cost you the visit.
- Free days: the first Sunday of every month is free for everyone, plus 25 April, 2 June and 4 November. Free means crowded — go at opening or not at all.
A suggested route with the audio guide
Plan on 75 minutes inside the Colosseum, and another two hours or so if you carry on into the Roman Forum and the Palatine on the same ticket. Follow the points of interest in the order of the table above — it tracks the natural walking route — and play each track as you reach it. Bring earphones.
- The Exterior — start outside, at the façade. This is the one part you can listen to before your slot even opens.
- The Cavea — the tiered seating, and the Roman class system made out of stone.
- The Arena and the Hypogeum — the stage and the machinery underneath it. You will be looking down into the hypogeum from the tiers unless you have a Full Experience ticket.
- The Velarium — the awning system, best understood from the upper level where the mast supports are still visible.
- Out to the Forum — your ticket already covers the Roman Forum, and the Arch of Titus is one of its entrances. Walk it within 24 hours of your Colosseum slot.
The Colosseum entrance is a short walk from the Arch of Constantine, near what is known as the “Valadier Spur”. You can browse the rest of our free Rome audio guides too.
Our free audio guide and the official app — which do you need?
Let us be straight with you, because it matters here. The Colosseum Archaeological Park has its own official app, MyColosseum, and it is completely free. It carries interactive audio guides in Italian and English that follow you automatically as you walk, from the underground up to the attic. It is good, it costs nothing, and if you are standing in the Colosseum it is very probably the better tool. Download it for iOS or Android before you go.
So why is ours here? For the part the official app cannot help you with: you can listen to this one right now, in your browser, before you buy anything — no download, no ticket, no account. That is what you need while you are still deciding whether 75 minutes is enough, whether the arena ticket is worth the extra, and which morning to book. Use ours to plan the visit; use theirs inside the monument. They are not competing for the same moment.
Practical tips for a smoother visit
- Bring the ID that matches your ticket. Tickets are issued in the holder’s name and the park asks you to keep a document visible at the entrance. A name that does not match is the one mistake that cannot be fixed at the gate.
- Arrive 15 minutes before your slot — the park’s own advice. Security is the queue, not the ticket desk.
- Book at the official site. The 30-day window is the real constraint; there is no trick to getting a sold-out slot.
- Do the Forum and Palatine on the same ticket. They are included, they are open from 9:00, and you have 24 hours either side of your Colosseum slot to use them.
- Wear real shoes and bring water. The Forum is uneven stone with almost no shade, and it is a long way round.

Yes. The park's official MyColosseum app is free and includes interactive audio guides in Italian and English that follow you as you walk.
The guide on this page is free too, and it plays straight in your browser with nothing to install, which makes it the one to use while you are still planning your trip.
Can you change the name on a Colosseum ticket?
Only once, and only until midnight on the seventh day before the visit. It is allowed for an obvious spelling mistake, a ticket type assigned to the wrong person in the same purchase, or a serious and documented reason that prevents the visit.
How do free Sundays work at the Colosseum?
On the first Sunday of the month entry is free for everyone, and there is no online booking. Free tickets are handed out in order of arrival at the ticket office in Piazza del Colosseo, near the Temple of Venus and Rome and Largo della Salara Vecchia.
