About Salamanca

Salamanca's free audio guide in English is for the Plaza Mayor, the city's main square. It is a pedestrian public square, so there's no ticket and no gate: it's open 24 hours a day, every day. The audio guide lasts about 4 minutes and takes you round all 4 sides, starting at City Hall on the north side, whose belfry with its 3 bells was added in 1852, then the Royal Pavilion on the east side, the first stretch to be built, from 1729, and on round the south and west sides.

Look up between the arches: the curved spaces hold stone medallions with the busts of figures from Spanish history, from kings on the Royal Pavilion to soldiers on the San Martín side. When the medallion of Alfonso IX was unveiled on 4 August 2023, it brought the total to 67 carved medallions, with 21 spaces still empty. Allow 20 to 30 minutes to walk all 4 sides at an easy pace.
