Check before you go: the mosaic room is closed
If you are coming for the great battle mosaic, check the museum’s own room schedule first. As of 15 September 2026 the museum lists the mosaic collection as closed for refurbishment from 16 September to 30 November 2026. The restoration itself is finished; what is going on is the reinstallation. One more thing that catches people out: on free-admission days the Secret Room, the Egyptian collection and Magna Graecia are shut for safety reasons, so the free day is the wrong day for exactly the rooms most visitors come for. Where these rooms came from — with their own free audio guides
Almost nothing in the Pompeian galleries was made in Naples. The battle mosaic was lifted out of the floor of the House of the Faun in Pompeii — the park says so itself, and what you see in the house today is a copy — and a good part of what hangs in the Secret Room was cut from the walls of the Lupanar and houses like it. If you are going on to the excavations, both have their own free audio guide on this site. The train is simpler than it looks, but the stop matters: Circumvesuviana towards Sorrento to Pompei Villa dei Misteri for the Porta Marina gate, or towards Poggiomarino to Pompei Santuario for the Piazza Anfiteatro gate. Around 30 minutes from Napoli Porta Garibaldi, 3,30 € one way.
